Winthrop women’s golfer Alayna Friedt was named the Big South Conference Freshman of the Week, according to a March 12 announcement from the league office.
Friedt earned this recognition after leading her team with a tie for 20th place at the Low Country Intercollegiate, where Winthrop finished eighth out of fifteen teams. She posted a team-low score of 76 in the opening round and followed with a 75 in the second round, finishing the tournament at 15-over par. This marked Friedt’s best finish as an Eagle and her first time leading the team in a tournament this season, having previously recorded two second-best finishes.
Friedt also led Winthrop in Par 4 scoring and tied for the team’s lowest Par 3 scoring during the event. The honor marks not only her first conference weekly award but is also notable as it is the first such recognition for any Eagle this season. The last Winthrop player to receive Freshman of the Week honors was Constanca Mendonca on Feb. 29, 2024.
