Winthrop University’s baseball team secured a 6-5 victory over Radford in extra innings on March 14, with Colin Crowley hitting a two-out, walk-off double in the 10th inning at Founders Field. The win marks the Eagles’ second consecutive extra-inning triumph and clinches their first Big South series of the season.
The game was closely contested, with Radford taking an early lead after scoring twice in the second inning and adding another run in the third. Winthrop responded by getting on the board in the fourth when Hernandez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Chazz Grossington tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run single in the fifth, and Grant McGuire put Winthrop ahead with a two-run single in the sixth.
Radford managed to tie it up again in the eighth inning following a throwing error and an RBI single. Dylan Hansen kept Winthrop’s hopes alive by pitching two scoreless innings and striking out three batters across the ninth and tenth frames. In the bottom of the tenth, Norton singled and McGuire walked before Crowley delivered his decisive hit to left center field, bringing Norton home for the win.
Corey Wouters and Gabe Natividad each collected three hits for Winthrop, helping pace their offense. The Eagles improved their record to 13-6 overall and 2-0 in Big South play, while Radford fell to 8-8. Radford starter Corey Costello threw over one hundred pitches but struggled with control, issuing five walks during his outing.
Winthrop has now won three of its last four games as it continues conference play. The Eagles are set to face Radford again on March 15 at noon.
