Winthrop University announced on Mar. 12 that men’s basketball senior Logan Duncomb and softball junior Tia Beckham have been selected as the Comporium Student-Athletes of the Month for February.
The recognition highlights the achievements of student-athletes who have shown outstanding performance in their respective sports during the month. The award is intended to acknowledge both athletic excellence and contributions to their teams.
Duncomb averaged 17.8 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game in February. He started the month with a last-second layup that secured an 80-78 win over Radford on the road. Duncomb broke Winthrop’s single-season records for free throws made and attempted, surpassing marks previously held by Keon Johnson (2016-17) and Charlie Brunson (46 seasons ago), respectively. He also became only the second player in program history to average a double-double during conference play, was voted to the Big South All-Conference First Team, named Big South Conference Player of the Year, and recently became a finalist for the collegeinsider.com Nolan Richardson Award.
Beckham posted a .400 batting average with seven runs, four doubles, one triple, five home runs, five walks, and 22 runs batted in over 16 games in February. After starting the season without a hit in her first eleven at-bats and recording just one RBI, she rebounded with an impressive stretch: collecting 18 hits, seven runs, four doubles, five home runs, and 21 RBI over her next eleven games. Beckham homered in four consecutive games—a program record—and hit a grand slam against Drexel on Feb. 21 as well as a two-run home run against #19 South Carolina on Feb. 25. In those last eleven games she recorded seven multi-hit games and six multi-RBI games; she currently leads her team in RBI (24) and ranks third in batting average (.348).
The accomplishments of Duncomb and Beckham reflect their significant impact on Winthrop athletics during February.
