House Republicans have passed the One Big Beautiful Bill, a legislative package aimed at providing tax relief and expanding educational options for American families. The bill includes measures such as a 15% average tax cut for individuals earning between $15,000 and $80,000 per year, an expanded Child Tax Credit of $2,200 benefiting over 40 million families, and a permanent increase in the Standard Deduction to $31,500.

Congressman Ralph Norman commented on the legislation’s impact. “This bill is about strengthening the backbone of our nation – the American family,” said Norman. “It means more money in your pocket, more freedom in your children’s education, and greater opportunities for families to build a strong future. At the end of the day, that’s what good policy should do – give families room to thrive, not government more room to interfere.”

The bill also expands education savings accounts and increases eligible expenses for 529 plans. Pell Grants will now cover certificate and licensing programs. New tax-advantaged “Trump Investment Accounts” are being introduced for newborns to help families invest early in their child’s future. Additionally, the cap on Dependent Care Assistance Plans has been raised to help with childcare costs.

To address welfare reform, the bill implements work requirements for able-bodied adults on Medicaid while ensuring resources remain available for groups such as pregnant women, single mothers, children, low-income seniors, and Americans with disabilities.

Ralph Norman currently serves in Congress representing South Carolina’s 5th district after replacing Mick Mulvaney in 2017 (https://bioguide.congress.gov/search/bio/N000190). He previously served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2005 until his election to Congress (https://norman.house.gov/about/). Born in Rock Hill in 1953 and a graduate of Presbyterian College with a Bachelor of Science degree earned in 1975, Norman continues to reside in Rock Hill.
