Rep. Ralph Norman, a U.S. Congressman representing South Carolina’s 5th district since 2017, recently shared his views on congressional responsibility and Medicaid spending through a series of tweets. These posts address concerns about federal administration changes and Medicaid policy.
On May 14, 2025, Rep. Norman questioned the seriousness of Congress in fulfilling its duties with an impending new administration: “By that point, there will be a new administration. How SERIOUS is Congress about doing its job for once?”
The following day, May 15, he highlighted the increase in Medicaid spending over the past five years: “Medicaid spending is up 51% in just FIVE years.” He criticized the Federal Medical Assistance Percentages (FMAP) policy under Obamacare for causing increased wait times and prioritizing able-bodied adults over more vulnerable groups like disabled individuals, children, and pregnant women.
In another tweet on May 15, Rep. Norman discussed federal funding disparities: “Right now, states get a 90% match from the feds to cover able-bodied adults, but just 50-77% to cover folks with disabilities.” He argued that current policies reward dependency rather than addressing genuine needs.
Ralph Norman was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina in 1953 and graduated from Presbyterian College in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Before joining Congress, he served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2005 to 2017.
