ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University’s Homecoming and Reunion Weekend will feature in-person and virtual events this fall.
At this time, the university is planning to welcome alumni back home for Homecoming festivities taking place over the course of three weeks. Each week, events will lead up to celebratory weekends on Oct. 8-9, Nov. 5-6 and Nov. 12-13.
This year’s staggered Homecoming will allow alumni to gather safely in smaller groups due to continuing COVID-19 concerns. Alumni and guests should expect to adhere to all safety and health precautions; for instance, face coverings will be required indoors on campus, regardless of vaccination status.
“Safety, of course, is our utmost concern for alumni looking forward to reconnecting and socializing with friends and classmates again. We couldn’t be together in-person for Homecoming in 2020, so this year is extra special and I’m hoping alumni will embrace a new Homecoming experience,” said Byron Putman ‘94, president of the Winthrop University Alumni Association. “I think now, more than ever, we can start looking at ways to create new traditions.”
Homecoming attendees won’t see the return of traditional events like Homecoming on the Green and tailgating just yet but there will be something for everyone to enjoy with activities and events happening on campus and city-wide. Visit the Homecoming and Reunion website for the complete list of activities and information on how to register. If you are unable to attend in person, virtual events will be hosted as well. Below are some of the events you can take part in whether you celebrate in person or virtually.
• Winthrop Spirit Check Video
• Virtual Homecoming Happy Hour with The Tipsy Doc
• Homecoming Happy Hour at Slow Play Brewing
• "Winthrop Remembers" Archives Display
• Campus Art Tours
• College of Visual and Performing Arts Theatre and Dance Productions
• Athletic Events
Again this year, Homecoming T-shirts will be offered to allow alumni to show their Eagle spirit. The $15 shirts feature some of the most iconic and favorite spots on campus. Purchases should be made by Sept. 27, however, those attending the first round of Homecoming events in October should purchase by Sept. 10.
Class Reunions Will Celebrate Milestones
Class years ending in '1 or '6 are celebrating a milestone reunion this year! Events are tailored specifically to each reunion class and include:
• Class Reunion Welcome Reception with Interim President George Hynd and First Lady Alison Hynd.
• Class Reunion Brunch with food, games and photo opportunities.
• Campus tours with Winthrop Ambassadors, campus art tours and events from Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections.
• Sporting events taking place the weekend of their class reunion.
“It’s always a thrill to engage with alumni during reunion celebrations. You truly get a sense of Winthrop’s impact through the decades and why alumni are so devoted to their alma mater,” Putman said.
