Homecoming & Reunion
ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University will kick off a week-long schedule of Homecoming activities Nov. 8-13, which will include a mix of virtual and in-person offerings.
Lori Tuttle, executive director of alumni relations and reunion giving, said she is delighted to welcome alumni back to campus after a year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our Homecoming Committee has worked hard to provide lots of opportunities for alumni and students to connect with the campus community,” Tuttle said. “We want everyone to join together to celebrate what makes Winthrop special. We are excited to welcome our alumni home and we are excited about the slate of events that has something for everyone.”
Virtual events will be hosted Monday, Nov. 8 – Thursday, Nov. 11 and include the Winthrop Spirit Check, Tipsy Tuesday with The Tipsy Doc, Winthrop Bingo, a Facebook Live session with the alumni Board of Trustees candidates and Zooms with the Tom Riginos, the baseball coach, and Semeka Randall Lay, the women’s basketball coach.
Meanwhile, students will have a special Homecoming kickoff meal on Nov. 8 at Eagle Eatery, a Pep Rally on Nov. 10 on the Campus Green and a special version of the hit TV show, “The Masked Singer” singing competition in Tillman Auditorium.
Alumni arriving in Rock Hill on Friday, Nov. 12, can drop by and visit the Winthrop Archives, join the Alumni Author Talk in the bookstore, take a campus art tour or campus tour, and finish with Homecoming Happy Hour at Slow Play Brewing.
Saturday, Nov. 13, events include a 9 a.m. Campus Beautification Initiative volunteer opportunity, an 11 a.m. baseball alumni game, noon-1 p.m. West Center tours, a 12:30 p.m. viewing of the 1919 Winthrop film, 2 p.m. campus art tour and the men's basketball game at 2 p.m. against Mercer University.
There also will be plenty of entertainment throughout the weekend, including dance and step performances. Here are the details:
· Winthrop Dance Theatre, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12-13, 7:30 p.m. Johnson Theatre, Johnson Hall.
A full evening of works choreographed by faculty and guest artists, featuring a variety of dance genres. Purchase tickets from the theatre box office.
· “Step!” Friday, Nov. 12, 8 p.m., Tillman Auditorium, Tillman Hall
This is a step performance and presentation by the professional touring group P.L.A.Y.E.R.S. Club Steppers. They will perform high energy step routines with traditional African dances for an electrifying performance.
