Winthrop University: New Head Coaches Kick Off Basketball Seasons

Winthrop University issued the following announcement on November 9.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The defending Big South champions, who are the preseason pick to repeat as conference champions, opened the season on Nov. 9 at home and will play a nearly 30-game schedule, with conference action kicking off Jan. 5. 
  • The women’s season began on Nov. 9 and will also include a nearly 30-game slate, with conference games beginning Dec. 29. 
ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - The Prosser and Randall Lay eras have officially started at Winthrop University. Men’s Basketball Coach Mark Prosser and Women’s Basketball Coach Semeka Randall Lay have begun their first seasons as head coaches of the Winthrop basketball programs.

Prosser, who was hired in April, is the program’s seventh head coach, and he spent the last three seasons as the head coach of the Western Carolina men’s basketball program. He previously served as an assistant/associate head coach at Winthrop from 2012-18.

Randall Lay served as the women’s basketball interim head coach for the 2020-21 season before being named the permanent head coach in April. She is the program’s 17th head coach. Lay, who was a standout player at the University of Tennessee, brings to the position a wealth of coaching and playing experience.
