ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) recently awarded Winthrop University a $10,000 grant to help with its recycling efforts.
Sustainability Coordinator Chris Johnson ’99 said Winthrop’s goal is to provide centralized collection stations in all of its buildings. This grant will pay for new 36-gallon bins in three buildings, making the choice to recycle much more convenient for faculty, staff, students and visitors.
“Winthrop continues to adapt to changes experienced by the recycling industry over the past few years by focusing on reducing contamination of recycling and reduce waste generated,” Johnson said.
The university offers two types of bins which are clearly marked: one to recycle office paper, books, magazines, newspaper, cardboard, etc., while the other handles plastic bottles, jugs, jars and metal cans.
Bins are currently in most academic buildings, administrative and support buildings, all residence halls and in several outdoor locations on the main campus and athletic facilities.
Recycling collection at Winthrop is a collaborative effort on campus and with local governments, said Johnson.
“York County is a valued partner in our efforts,” Johnson said. “Now that the city of Rock Hill is recycling with York County, Winthrop has and will continue to combine our efforts to educate the public about recycling correctly.”
He added that the Office of Sustainability has been reducing the number of waste collection receptacles in the last few years as it has increased the number of recycling bins. Winthrop has received recycling grant money from DHEC annually since 2013.
A portion of this latest $10,000 grant also will pay for professional development opportunities.
