Welcome Week 2022 Celebrates Culture, Tradition and Fun

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Welcome Week 2022 is scheduled for Aug. 20-28 and includes the cherished Winthrop tradition, Convocation.
  • Unless otherwise noted, events are $5 for students, $7 for the public or free with the purchase of a DSU Welcome Week pass.  
ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – The Winthrop University community will travel to Bollywood, the Caribbean, Africa and even the movie theatre during Welcome Week, Aug. 20-28.

New and returning students are encouraged to attend these exciting events, where they can make new friends, engage with the campus community and more! 

The DiGiorgio Student Union (DSU) has a lineup with something for everyone. Unless otherwise noted, events are $5 for students, $7 for the public or free with the purchase of a DSU Welcome Week pass.  

Saturday, Aug. 20

A Night in Bollywood

8 p.m., Tillman Auditorium

Bollywood culture will be highlighted through a fusion of dance, music and performance.

Sunday, Aug. 21

AfroBeats

8 p.m., Richardson Ballroom

Celebrate Afro-Caribbean culture with drummers, dancehall, soca, Afrobeats and other music genres representing the African diaspora.

Monday, Aug. 22

Convocation

11 a.m., West Center

A true Winthrop tradition dating back to Winthrop’s founder and first president, David Bancroft Johnson. New President Edward Serna ’02 will welcome new students and convene the 137th academic year. Make sure to wear your Blue Line T-shirt! Following the Convocation ceremony, President Serna and First Lady Lauren Serna will lead the Blue Line to the Margaret Nance lawn for a BBQ lunch. Campus ministries, local churches and civic organizations will have tables set up on the lawn to provide students with information on how to get involved on campus and in the community. 

Tuesday, Aug. 23

Win Your Tuition!

8 p.m., Richardson Ballroom

Compete in an intense game of trivia for a chance to win money that can be used toward tuition.

Wednesday, Aug. 24

Own Your Experience With Chauncey Beaty ‘04

8 p.m., Tillman Auditorium 

Speaker and coach Chauncey Beaty ’04 will give a keynote speech on resiliency and “owning the Winthrop experience,” giving students tools to prepare to move beyond hurdles and meet challenges with solution-based thinking. 

Thursday, Aug. 25

Jabali African Acrobats

8 p.m., Tillman Auditorium

The Jabali African Acrobats from Kenya will perform a series of high-stakes acrobatics.

Saturday, Aug. 27

Welcome Week Party featuring ALWZ SNNY

8 p.m., Richardson Ballroom

EDM DJ and producer ALWZ SNNY blends top dance hits with his artistic sound with one goal in mind: always have fun!

Sunday, Aug. 28

“Nope” Movie Screening

8 p.m., Manchester Cinemas, 1935 Cinema Drive, Rock Hill

Take a trip to the movies to see Jordan Peele’s new offering, “Nope,” starring Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya. Quick synopsis: caretakers at a California horse ranch encounter a mysterious force that affects human and animal behavior.

Welcome Week passes are $10 for students and can be purchased online. Individual event tickets can also be purchased online.
