Congressmen Joe Wilson (R-SC) and Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) have put forward the Maximum Support Act, a bipartisan legislation aimed at addressing issues related to Iranian-backed activities globally. The bill entails establishing an interagency strategy for supporting internet freedom and opposing censorship activities in Iran. Furthermore, it seeks to confiscate assets belonging to the Government of Iran and designates the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security as a foreign terrorist organization.
Representative Wilson emphasized the importance of the bill by stating, “The brutal regime in Tehran is the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism and responsible for supporting terrorist puppets causing mayhem in the Middle East and Latin America, especially Hezbollah. I am grateful to introduce this legislation to push back against the Iranian regime’s malign influence in Iraq and in the Western Hemisphere, while providing maximum support to the people of Iran.”
Representative Panetta highlighted the Iranian government’s actions, “The Iranian regime continues to suppress its people through internet censorship and repression. The Maximum Support Act counters these abuses by bolstering internet freedom, seizing regime assets to aid pro-democracy efforts, and supporting those resisting oppression. We must stand with the Iranian people in their fight for freedom and a brighter future.”
