The Winthrop University baseball team won its regular season finale against Longwood with an 11-5 victory at Founders Field on May 16. The Eagles completed the series win over the Lancers, improving their record to 33-22 overall and 15-9 in the Big South Conference.
This result positions Winthrop for a strong entry into the upcoming Big South Conference tournament, reflecting consistent performance throughout the season.
Chazz Grossington opened scoring for Winthrop with a solo home run to left field. Alan Benhardt contributed significantly, going three-for-five at bat with a double and three runs batted in. Grossington also had two hits, including his home run, and drove in three runs while drawing a walk. Cade Norton added an RBI single and stole two bases.
Longwood responded early but was unable to close the gap as Winthrop continued to add runs throughout the game. Jaylen Hernandez recorded two or more hits for his third consecutive game, while Shane Keup achieved a season-high two strikeouts looking. The Eagles registered at least eleven strikeouts swinging for the second straight contest.
The Eagles will now prepare for their next matchup in the Big South Conference Baseball Championship tournament scheduled for Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in Asheville, North Carolina.
