The Winthrop University baseball team was named the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Big South Conference Baseball Tournament, according to a May 17 announcement from the conference office.
This seeding comes after Winthrop finished the regular season with a record of 33-22 overall and a 15-9 mark in conference play, marking its highest tournament seeding since being top overall seed in 2017.
High Point University received the No. 1 seed for this year’s championship. The top six teams in the final standings qualified for the double-elimination postseason event, which will take place from May 20 to May 23 at HomeTrust Park in Asheville, North Carolina. Both High Point and Winthrop will receive byes into the second day of competition. Defending champion USC Upstate and Charleston Southern both ended with identical conference records (13-11), but USC Upstate earned the No. 3 seed based on its head-to-head series win over Charleston Southern, who takes the fourth spot. Radford is seeded fifth after finishing league play at .500 (12-12), while Longwood secured sixth place and its first tournament berth since 2018.
High Point aims to win its second Big South Baseball Tournament title in three years, while USC Upstate seeks to become back-to-back champions—a feat last accomplished by another school in consecutive years ending in 2023. Winthrop has previously won four championships; Radford has two titles; Charleston Southern and Longwood are still seeking their first.
The championship is hosted by Explore Asheville at Asheville Tourists’ home field and starts Wednesday, May 20 with three games scheduled throughout opening day, concluding Saturday, May 23 with up to two possible championship contests beginning at noon. All games will be broadcast on ESPN+. The winner of this year’s tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Baseball Championship.
