The Winthrop University baseball team lost to High Point University with a final score of 7-3 on May 9 at Williard Stadium. Winthrop held an early advantage but could not maintain the lead as High Point rallied in the third inning.

This game was significant for both teams as they compete for position in the Big South standings. The outcome affected Winthrop’s record, moving them to 30-20 overall and 13-7 in conference play, while High Point improved to 33-17 overall and 14-6 in the Big South.

In the first inning, Gabe Natividad was hit by a pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Corey Wouters, giving Winthrop a quick lead. The Eagles extended their advantage to 2-0 in the second inning when Chazz Grossington singled and later scored on Colin Crowley’s groundout. However, High Point responded with one run in their half of the second before scoring four more runs in the third inning, taking control of the game.

Alan Benhardt reached base on an error during the fourth inning and scored on another single from Grossington, cutting into High Point’s lead. Despite this effort, High Point added two more runs with a home run in the seventh inning. Key performances for Winthrop included Grossington going two-for-four with one RBI and Jaylen Hernandez also collecting two hits along with a stolen base. Walker Brodt pitched five and one-third innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out two batters.

Both Grossington and Hernandez achieved milestones during this game by reaching fifty hits each for the season. The series record between these teams at High Point has remained unchanged since 2011.

The Eagles will conclude their series against High Point tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
