Winthrop softball secured a 9-5 comeback victory over Longwood on Apr. 17 in the opening game of their Big South Conference series.
The win is significant for Winthrop, as it marks their first road victory at Longwood since April 2018 and extends their winning streak against the Lancers to six games.
Longwood started strong with a four-run lead in the first inning, but Winthrop began to close the gap by scoring twice in the third. Peyton Bryden contributed with a single, followed by Tia Beckham’s RBI hit up the middle. The Eagles continued their push, making it a one-run game in the fifth after back-to-back singles from Darrah Nickens and Beckham and a sacrifice fly from Carli Pearson.
Emma Roberson’s triple in the sixth set up another run that tied the game at four apiece after an error by Longwood’s shortstop. In the decisive seventh inning, Winthrop took advantage of walks and errors before Bryden hit a three-run home run to center field, extending their lead to 9-4. Lonna Addison pitched five innings of relief for her 16th win of the season, allowing just one run on two hits.
Bryden now has a four-game hitting streak and recorded her career’s 100th single during this match. The teams will complete their series with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, Apr. 18.
