Winthrop University’s women’s lacrosse team is set to play Old Dominion at Eagle Field in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on Sunday, March 8. The game marks the Eagles’ final non-conference home event of the season.
The Eagles enter the matchup with a 2-3 record, while Old Dominion holds a 4-2 mark. Historically, Old Dominion has won all three previous meetings between the two teams.
Winthrop currently ranks third nationally in caused turnovers per game with an average of 14.40 and sits sixteenth in ground balls per game at 17.80. The team recently lost to Charlotte and Davidson but scored their highest-ever goal total against Davidson.
Senior Tori Iannotti was named Big South Player of the Week after scoring ten goals on thirteen shots over the past week, achieving an efficiency rate of .867 percent. “Iannotti opened the week with four goals against Campbell in a back-and-forth thriller that slipped away in the final few possessions. She followed that up with a six goal performance on just six shots, sitting one goal shy of tying her career-high. Iannotti was the driving force to help the Eagles get their first win over Queens in program history, in a dramatic double overtime contest,” according to Winthrop Athletics.
Gabby Pierpont earned Big South Defensive Player of the Week honors for her contributions both offensively and defensively. “The senior midfielder kicked off the week with two goals against Campbell with one draw control and one caused turnover. She then shifted to more defensive statistics, putting up a career-high four caused turnovers and tying her career-high with four ground balls in the double overtime win against Queens. All told, Pierpont had four ground balls, five caused turnovers and three draw controls on the week,” as stated by Winthrop Athletics.
In Saturday’s double-overtime victory over Queens at Eagle Field—Winthrop’s first-ever win against Queens—both Iris Leavitt and Christina Warren recorded hat tricks; Warren increased her season total to seven goals.
The Eagles narrowly lost to Campbell 16-15 despite hat tricks from Iannotti, Leavitt, and Warren. Lily Davis was named Big South Defender of the Week after collecting eight ground balls—a figure tied for second-most in program history—and causing three turnovers while also scoring her first career goal.
Earlier this season, Winthrop defeated Kennesaw State in overtime following a late comeback led by Emily Hollinger’s hat trick and overtime-winning goal.
The team was picked fifth in this year’s Big South Preseason Poll—their highest ranking since 2023—and returned to last season’s conference tournament for the first time since 2022 after finishing fifth overall.
Four of Winthrop’s top five point scorers return this year along with goalkeeper Mikaylah Lindsay, who played sixteen games last season and ranked among national leaders in saves per game.
Lily Davis finished eleventh in conference rankings for caused turnovers per game at 1.29; Christina Warren also placed eleventh for goals per game at 2.46; Lindsay ranked within the top hundred nationally for saves last year.
Winthrop brings back twenty-one players from last year’s roster while adding fourteen newcomers to bolster depth across positions.
