Today the entire Clinton College community mourns the passing of Bishop Mildred B. Hines, Presiding Prelate of the South Atlantic Episcopal District and Chair of the Clinton College Board of Trustees.
Bishop Hines was elected in Atlanta, Georgia on July 18, 2008, at the 48th General Conference of The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church as the 98th bishop in the line of succession of The A.M.E. Zion Church. A trailblazer, she is the first and only female to be elected to the episcopacy in the 226-year history of the denomination and in February 2013 she became the first female to head The A.M.E. Zion Church when she was elected President of the Board of Bishops.
She served on the Board of Trustees for 6 years, where she was instrumental in bringing the Reverend Dr. Lester A. McCorn to Clinton College as Acting President in June of 2017. She also strongly urged the South Atlantic District ministers in the A.M.E. Zion Course of Study to attend Clinton College to obtain certificates and degrees. She was a strong advocate for the College, advancing the Special Education Fund in each of the Annual Conferences, in support of scholarships for students. A lover of sacred music, Bishop Hines became an avid supporter of the new choir and music program at Clinton.
