Last week, Representative Ralph Norman and Senator Lindsey Graham sent a letter to President Donald Trump, urging him to award Major James Capers, Jr. the Medal of Honor. This letter was cosigned by six Senators and forty Members of Congress.

Major Capers, who was born in Lee County, South Carolina, performed acts of valor during the Vietnam War when his Marine Corps special operations team was ambushed in Phu Loc, Vietnam in 1967. Despite being outnumbered three to one, Major Capers led his team to safety, with all members surviving though injured.

Rep. Norman has introduced legislation to award Major Capers the Medal of Honor during both the 117th and 118th Congresses. The Medal of Honor is given for acts that go above and beyond the call of duty while engaged against an enemy or in military operations involving conflict with opposing forces.

Major Capers served 22 years in the Marine Corps and became the first African American to serve in its elite Force Recon unit. He participated in over 50 classified missions during his career. For his service, he received numerous honors including three Purple Hearts and the Silver Star.

"Mr. James Capers, Jr. is a legend and should be honored as one," said Rep. Norman. "He deserves to be honored as a decorated Marine and for his exemplary character.”

“Major James Capers, Jr. has served his nation with great distinction," said Senator Lindsey Graham.

“Major James Capers, Jr. overcame humble beginnings to become an American hero," stated Senator Tim Scott.

Rep. Joe Wilson remarked that "Major James Capers, Jr.'s battlefield actions during the Vietnam War are worthy of America’s highest military honor."

Rep. Nancy Mace noted that "Honoring Major Capers is not just about recognizing one Marine’s extraordinary service—it’s about reaffirming our nation’s commitment."

Rep. Sheri Biggs added: “His bravery saved lives and demonstrated exceptional leadership.”
