Congressmen Joe Wilson and Jimmy Panetta have introduced the Pakistan Democracy Act, a legislative measure aimed at promoting democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in Pakistan. This initiative comes in response to concerns following the February 2024 elections and the ongoing influence of military power over civilian governance in the country.
The act is designed to support democratic forces within Pakistan by authorizing targeted sanctions and mandating a report on the nation's progress towards democratic governance. "I believe that U.S-Pakistan relations are strongest when Pakistan lives up to its democratic ideals," said Rep. Wilson. He emphasized the importance of standing up for democracy globally, particularly in light of recent global conflicts.
Rep. Wilson also addressed his differences with Imran Khan, noting Khan's past anti-American statements and his stance on international issues. Despite these differences, Wilson acknowledged Khan as a political prisoner, stating that political disagreements should be resolved through elections rather than persecution.
Rep. Panetta highlighted the wrongful persecution and imprisonment of Imran Khan and others for their political beliefs as contrary to democratic principles. "The Pakistan Democracy Act makes clear that the United States will stand against authoritarian crackdowns and in support of free, fair, and open elections," he stated.
The proposed legislation underscores the importance of a stable and democratic Pakistan for both its citizens and regional security.
