Rep. Ralph Norman, representing South Carolina, has taken the lead in a collective effort by the state's delegation to urge President Donald Trump to award Bobby Richardson the Medal of Freedom. The letter sent to the President highlights Richardson's notable career and contributions both on and off the baseball field.
Bobby Richardson, originally from Sumter, South Carolina, is renowned for his time as a second baseman with the New York Yankees. His career includes eight All-Star selections, three World Series titles, and five Gold Gloves. In 1960, he made history by being named the World Series Most Valuable Player despite his team not winning that year. His jersey was retired by the Yankees on September 17, 1966, marking "Bobby Richardson Day," an honor shared by only ten players.
Richardson's influence extends beyond sports. He received the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award in 1963 for exemplifying character and integrity akin to Gehrig himself. His involvement with organizations such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and his decade-long presidency at Baseball Chapel highlight his commitment to service. Additionally, he contributed to national health initiatives through his work with the President's Council for Physical Fitness.
The Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to U.S. security or national interests, world peace, or cultural endeavors. Rep. Norman emphasized Richardson's qualifications for this honor: "Bobby Richardson’s legacy is one of excellence, faith, and service—both on and off the field," said Rep. Norman in a statement on Friday."A champion in baseball and in life, he has inspired countless others through his unwavering integrity, leadership, and devotion to his community and faith. I am proud to support this effort to award him the Medal of Freedom."
